Barbados Crop Over 2012

Barbados Crop Over 2012: The Essential Guide

Barbados Crop Over Festival Calendar 2012

May to August are months of celebration for Barbados, the official start of the Barbados Crop Over Festival. This twelve-week celebration that starts in May up until August is a tradition since the 1780’s. It is a festival marking the end of the sugar cane cutting season in Barbados in the time that the land was one of the world’s famous producer of sugar. Festivals are being held in the culmination of every sugar season. Due to the decline of the sugar industry in Barbados the festival was stopped in the 1940’s until it was revived for the purpose of tourism in the island during its “low season”.

At the present, the festival is a lively and exciting celebration of Barbados’ dance, music, masquerade, history, heritage and culture infused with the vibrations of the Calypso music. It is during the last five weeks of the festival where the most activities and gatherings happen. Such activities like: Calypso Tents, Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes, Cohobblopot, Kiddies Kadooment, Folk concerts and art and photographic exhibitions, Party Monarch, the Road March Monarch, the Pic-O-De-Crop Monarch, and Grand Kadooment. These events are also calendared in the so called Big Crop Over Weekend – where people both local and foreign gather to join in event after event of fun and excitement.
