10,000

by Craig Bellot

Last week we had our 10,000th unique visitor to the site after 7 months in operation. Yeah I know that’s not much compared to where we want to go, but I know many other e-commerce sites who haven’t had that many in this space of time.

Thanks to all our supporters.

Where Are You Going?

by Craig Bellot

I was reading Guy Kawasaki’s excellent book, The Art of The Start, and noted a powerful lesson/story which every musician can benefit from. It goes like this:

Albert Einstein was on a train and couldn’t find his ticket after searching his pockets or bags. The conductor approached him and said something to the effect of “Dr. Einstein, everyone knows who you are. We know that Princeton(the school he worked for) can afford to buy you another train ticket.”

Einstein replied, “I’m not worried about the money. I need to find the ticket to figure out where I’m going.”

Like Einstein, you should not worry about the money before knowing where you are going, i.e, who your music is for and what is your direction. Everything from your lyrics, melodies, progressions, and beats should reflect that audience your music will touch.

If you can figure out where you are going, the money will follow.

I couldn’t believe this post that John Legend sold 1.7 million copies of his last album, in the US alone, without having a single that gets major radio airplay.

Just goes to show that times are changing and radio is becoming less important than it once was.

From the Wall Street Journal, Kurt Hanson’s “Radio And Internet Newsletter.” says:

“A growing number of musicians are marketing singles and sometimes turning them into hits without the support of radio, at least initially. Radio still matters — a recent report by Mercury Radio Research, a company that studies the industry, found that the medium is still the primary way people discover new music. But other methods are making inroads … Panic! At the Disco, a Nevada rock band, got an early push from Purevolume, a music fan site, and the social networking site MySpace.”

So don’t underestimate the power of online advertising.

WCMF Traffic Increase

by Craig Bellot

Last weekend we experienced a good bump in traffic and sales, probably due to 1. the efforts of our self titled marketing expert who got us into a couple of newspapers. 2. The World Creole Music Festival in Dominica got a lot of people back to the island and could of had an impact on our visitor and sales numbers.

If you have any songs with us check your stats because most likely you have some extra sales from this past weekend.

We all know the CD as a format for distributing the artist’s songs is just about dead and if you don’t believe that, then don’t read any further. For the more open minded, we know that digital downloads are on the rise whether legal or illegal and the mp3 format as a marketing and distribution tool is here to stay.

This is where our site comes in because we are trying to increase the number of legal download sites by giving Caribbean artists a chance to have their own music store on the Internet and the ability to promote, market and sell their own songs online.

While we know that everyone, especially musicians, are not as tech savvy as we would like them to be, we are willing to help and would like you to direct any questions you may have about starting your Internet music store to support@numusiczone.com

We know how hard you’ve worked to create and produce your music, so why would trust anyone else with you hard work but yourself? You want to be in control of your creative material, keep your rights, your work, and most importantly your sanity. Earn fortunes based on your own merit, the way you’ve always wanted to.

You know it, I know it, we’ve all heard of record deals gone bad. Michael Jackson has left Sony Music, The Beatles are fighting with EMI, what makes you think it’s going to be smooth sailing for you? The labels business models are based on fresh new talent that they can hype up for one month and try to squeeze the most they can out of you, but what happens when you don’t live up their expectations? You either get screwed out of your royalties, or dropped altogether.

There is some good news though, artists do not need the record labels any more. With the Internet as ubiquitous as ever, you can get the same exposure, sales, and much more revenue share from marketing and selling your own songs online. Got some promotional videos? Post them on YouTube, upload your songs here and start promoting your albums web address the same way you would your previous CD.

Hey, we can’t guarantee that you’ll go platinum on your first release, but we CAN guarantee you a level playing field, whether you take advantage of this or not is up to you.
